Side-view of the 2020 Toyota Supra GR

The fifth-generation 2020 Toyota Supra GR model ends a 17-year hiatus for the model.

More and more, it seems automakers want consumers to actually drive less and less.

Toyota broke the modern mold of vehicle design, introducing its 2020 Toyota Supra GR at the North American International Auto Show.

Toyota has made it clear, designers intended the new Supra GR to be driven. It's a true throwback to when sport sedans didn't really exist. You either drove to drive, or simply to get from point A to point B.

Chief Engineer Tetsuya Tada, who headed development, said: "We set out to create a pure sports car that would attain the ultimate in the fun of driving. Rather than only working toward specs such as horsepower and circuit lap times, we emphasized sensitivity performance, such as the degree to which driving could be felt to be fun, with car and driver becoming one."

Toyota stayed true to tradition, equipping the new Supra GR with a 6.3-liter inline-6 twin-scroll turbocharged engine.

Driving technology focused on improving handling and making the car fun to drive. Some of the engineering features for drivers:

  • A high-rigidity body for a higher state of driving performance
  • A suspension that enables precise vehicle control
  • An active differential for heightened turning performance and stability

The Supra's interior creates a true sports car feel. The new-generation cockpit layout features plenty of visual tech and information, resulting from a shift-by-wire gearshift, an 8.8-inch TFT gauge display and a large, full-color head-up display.

Here's the tale of the tape on the new Supra GR:

  • 335 Horsepower
  • 0 - 60 in 4.1 seconds
  • Top Speed of 155 mph

Toyota estimated that the new 2020 Supra GR will be available in Spring of 2019. No pricing information was available at the time of posting.
