FCA Vehicle Backup Camera Fix

FCA has the backup camera glitch solution and expect the fix in May.

You've probably already heard about the FCA backup camera glitch. If you own one of 300,000 FCA vehicles from 2019-2020, you may have already experienced the problem.

It seems that some of the company's vehicles backup cameras keep projecting, even after the vehicle has been shifted to Drive. Annoying to say the least.

The issue only pertains to 2019-2020 FCA vehicles, and only involves the 8.4-inch and 12-inch systems. This includes the UAX, UAV, UAM, UAQ and UAS radios. FCA included these systems in the following vehicles:

  • 2020 Gladiator
  • 2020 Jeep Cherokee
  • 2019-20 All Ram Trucks
  • 2019-20 Chrysler Pacifica
  • 2019-20 Durango
  • 2019-20 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Wrangler & Renegade
  • 2019 Challenger

But not to worry, FCA jumped ahead of the game, and they have the fix.

Speaking to Dave Funk a vehicle infotainment guru and Manager at NavRepair, FCA has already developed a solution, and customers should begin getting the upgrades starting May 22.

"FCA has developed some software upgrades that appear to address the issue. There are a few different versions for specific types of vehicles." he stated.

Welcome to the digital era of vehicle infotainment systems. The fix in this case will be a software upgrade to the affected vehicles. With the modern vehicles, almost all of the systems rely on specific electronic control units. Therefore software actually operates the systems.

Funk says according to the information he's seen from FCA, the fixes will be administered via over-the-air updates to the vehicle directly or at the dealership. He doesn't have specifics at this time.

Owners experiencing the backup camera glitch can easily work around the problem in the meantime says Funk.

"For now, when drivers experience the problem, there's a simple work around. Put the car in Park, and turn off the ignition. Open and close your door to turn off the drive cycle. Once you start the vehicle, go directly to Drive. The screen will then give you functionality normally seen while in Drive," he explained.

One good thing to note. Factory upgraded systems like the ones sold at Infotainment.com, have not been experiencing the issue.
